Microdrama and Narrative Theory

For this task we had to create a short microdrama and apply Todorov's 5-part Narrative Formula to it.

Todorov's 5-part Narrative Formula
Every narrative can be broken down into three basic stages: situation, conflict, resolution ( or equilibrium, dis-equilibrium, new equilibrium). Crucially, the protagonist is not the same as at the outset, but has been changed in some way from events. Tzvetan Todorov posited five stages:

  1. a state of equilibrium at the outset;
  2. a disruption of the equilibrium by some action;
  3. a recognition that there has been a disruption;
  4. an attempt to repair the disruption;
  5. a reinstatement of the equilibrium

The five stages in our Microdrama

  1. Sophie is going on a date with someone.
  2. Jimmy George has been dating all three girls; Sophie, Emily and Laura at the same time.
  3. Sophie, Emily and Laura realise and plan to get Jimmy George back.
  4. The girls bully Jimmy George in various ways to get back at him.
  5. Jimmy George finds a magical four leaf clover meaning all will go back to normal.
